"Describe an achievement or rewarding experience that you are most proud of accomplishing while living with CF, and how it has molded the person you have become."

The proudest experience that I've had while living with CF was when I decided to fight my disease. When you're younger, you have your parents and doctors there to fight CF with you. And although they are still in your corner when you grow older, I believe there is a point in every patient's life where they decide that they want to fight for themselves. I remember my sophomore year of high school, sitting in Biology class, discussing CF. My teacher stated that most patients rarely make it past the age of 35. Filled with hopelessness, I thought: "Why bother fighting if I'm handed a death sentence anyway?" But I realized that I deserve to fight-- for myself, and for my future. I'm proud that each morning I wake up and decide to fight another day. CF doesn't allow much room for choice. People with CF didn't choose to have this disease, and we don't choose how much time we have on this Earth. But we all get to choose to fight. I'm proud that each day I fight for my future, for more sunny days, and for more time to revel in the laughter of friends and family. I'm proud that each day I get better at enjoying life. Choosing to fight my disease molded me into the optimist I am today. I'm proud that I am a fighter. I encourage everyone, those with and without CF, to reflect and ask themselves, "What will I fight for today?"
