"Describe an achievement or rewarding experience that you are most proud of accomplishing while living with CF, and how it has molded the person you have become."

For most of my life, CF was more of an inconvenience than a life-threatening illness. I made it through childhood with only one hospitalization in infancy, so I was shocked during the second semester of my freshman year in college when I had to medically withdraw due to sinus surgery, pneumonia, and a double kidney infection. All of a sudden, the ramifications of my CF were real. I could have dropped out and resigned myself to a different path. Instead, I overcame multiple obstacles and fought my way back. My first semester back, I earned a 3.78 GPA despite multiple CF-related illnesses and a ruptured appendix. I was inspired during my hospital stays by some excellent nurses, and as a result, I changed my major from Graphic Design to Nursing. In a time of great personal hardship, I found inspiration for the future. I knew that my greatest fulfillment would come from serving others. This experience gave me a unique and thorough understanding of what it means to be a patient. I intend to use that knowledge to deliver outstanding, compassionate care to others in their time of need. Persevering and excelling through this time of struggle has given me tremendous confidence and direction, bringing me to a place where I am grateful for my illness because it gives me the blessing of perspective. Although living with CF is difficult, it has made me stronger, more focused, and more determined than ever to achieve my goals.

Madison C.'s Artwork

Growing up, my friends played with dolls, and I played with crayons while daydreaming about becoming a famous artist. Although life steered me in a different direction, art has remained a wonderful creative outlet, stress reliever, and my favorite past time. This piece, done in charcoal, is a master study of my favorite artist, Georgia O'Keefe. O'Keefe is depicted with her famous piece "White Trumpet Flower" in the background. Of all the works of art I have produced, this is the one I am most proud of.
