"What inspirational advice would you give to others with CF entering high school or college? As part of your essay, please also explain the significance of your creative presentation to your journey with CF."

My advice to others with CF is find something you can be passionate about and pursue excellence in your chosen passion. This gives you the power to focus your life around something that inspires you and gives you joy, rather than allowing CF to define your life.

I started playing flute in 6th grade and it has been life changing in so many ways. I have formed deep friendships with people who share my passion for music and have watched me work hard to reach my goals, despite cystic fibrosis. I'm Elizabeth, the girl who loves playing the flute, not Elizabeth, the girl who has cystic fibrosis.

Flute has become more than my passion, it has become my life's ambition and will define my college years, lead to graduate school and ultimately my life's work. I will attend Stetson University, majoring in Music as part of the Flute Studio, then pursue graduate degrees in Music Therapy or Music Education with flute as my principle instrument.

Why is this so important to me as a CF patient? I cannot imagine life without my passion for flute. It drives me to work hard, focus my energy, and find success and joy every day. When CF treatments become tiresome, or when a hospital visit gets in the way, those are temporary distractions and I get through them easily, knowing I can return to my music.

For anyone with CF starting high school, find your joyful passion and pursue it!
