Life doesn’t stop. No matter what is going on, our world - full of friends, family, food, literature, music, art, and so on – continues to give itself unceasingly. The advice I would offer the me of today from the perspective of a year in the future would be to receive this gift of the world. For in the span of this year much will transpire, events large and momentous, but these will be embedded in the narrative of much smaller happenings that often go by unnoticed. The bad news yesterday came in the midst of the first sunny day in months; the boring commute home is interrupted by a favorite song on the radio; the acceptance letter I’ve anticipated for so long will arrive as I eat a weekly lunch with one of my dearest friends. These are the ‘soft spots’ of the day that serve as the background to our more serious endeavors, those points of concentration that take up most of our thought and feeling. Yet there are times when the background becomes the foreground. These are precious moments, for by lifting us temporarily from our first-person narratives, they grant us perspective, a third-person view that allows both humility and gratitude to arise. This kind of moment came to me about a month ago and inspired my creative submission, “Break of Day.” These moments help me to live life with CF—and the other parts of my life too—to the fullest.
