Leaving my job teaching high school English and pursuing a doctoral degree in teacher education seems like a great opportunity, but with that opportunity will come a new set of challenges and more fears to overcome. I currently teach juniors and seniors. 99% of my juniors become my senior students the following year. Telling them that the bond we have formed over the past year now has to be broken because I am leaving the classroom to become a student again is going to be painful. Many of the students share with me their hardships because they understand that my battle with CF is not all that different from their battle with poverty or relationships or abuse or even their own diseases. I become a mentor and even a father figure to many of them. A year from now, I would like to remind myself that becoming a teacher educator will allow me to reach many more students through the skills and knowledge I am able to instill in future teachers. Instead of being able to reach 90 students per year as a high school teacher, I will be able to reach 90 students times however many student-teachers I’ll educate after becoming a professor. I feel like I am letting so many students down by not being there for them next year, but I’m really not. This idea of being a guiding light for others is what is revealed through my creative presentation.

  • I am currently a high school English teacher. I teach AP English Language & Composition, AP English Literature & Composition, and dual-credit English 100 & 200 through Morehead State University.
  • I have been selected as the district's Model Classroom Teacher and have served as the English Department Chair and site-based decision making council member.
