Although many people have supported me throughout my life, there is one person who particularly has inspired me in terms of living with cystic fibrosis. That person is Paul Drury, a 50 year old friend with CF. Despite health struggles including lung and kidney transplants, there is no “feeling sorry” for Paul. He has managed to follow the “traditional” path by going away to college, getting a job, maintaining a home and family. He enjoys traveling and adventures of any kind. He is the most fun person I know, turning even small events into celebrations. Instead of focusing on any negative impact, Paul recognizes how CF has enriched his life. He has met and befriended many amazing people through his CF advocacy efforts, including his wife. I admire his success as he works tirelessly fundraising for the CF Foundation. He instilled in me this sense of responsibility, always encouraging me to do whatever I can to help find the cure. He sets an example of the best way to live with CF, to use it to improve yourself and your life.
My PowerPoint attempts to illustrate the philosophy I share with Paul about living with CF. I will not let CF limit or dictate my dreams. Do I wish I didn’t have CF? Of course, but since I can’t change that fact, I will make the best of it, enjoy life, and hopefully develop into a stronger, more compassionate person as I travel this journey.
