"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

I would like to talk about a personal event from about five years ago. This event was a benefit for a young boy with CF. This boy had a twin brother who did not have CF, and he had many complications with the illness since he was born. At the time, I was 15 years old. My mother knew the parents of the boy, and they asked me to sing and play my guitar at the benefit. I remember being excited yet very nervous. Every person at this event would know that I also had CF. Although the benefit was not for me, I definitely felt connected to it. I didn’t know that so many people even knew what Cystic Fibrosis was, let alone want to help support those who were affected by it. This boy had CF so bad that he had to have multiple surgeries when he was an infant. I would never have to know what that was like, and that simple fact made a huge impact on the outlook I had about this disease. This single event helped me grow in my Cystic Fibrosis journey. It showed me that every person with CF is different, but we are all still connected. It showed me that in order to beat CF, we must all work together as a community. This benefit was the first step to my realization that there are many people out there who want to help and provide support for those with Cystic Fibrosis.
