"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

The start of my life with Cystic Fibrosis was challenging. During infancy, I had complications from my CF which included Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and a bowel impaction. I remember my mother telling me how sickly I looked. I had a tough time keeping weight on my body—I was skin and bones. I had a lot of digestive problems during the first couple years of my life until one Sunday when my mother brought me to church and had me anointed. My mother said she was not planning on having the ceremony done on me that specific day—she recalls she felt a strange urge telling her to stand up and get in front of the hundred or so people. The ritual included being dripped with Holy Water and being prayed over. Ever since this day, I never had another digestive problem. I started to steadily gain weight which also helped my pulmonary function. To this day, my nutritionist always comments on my low dose of pancreatic enzymes. A few years ago, I was tested to see if I needed them. The anointment ceremony was the most miraculous and fundamental event in my life regarding my Cystic Fibrosis.
