When you’re sixteen, you don’t really expect your world to suddenly change - but then it does. I was a successful junior in high school with a lot of happiness; or so I thought. My cousin was graduating from Ohio University the last week of April 2016, so mom and I decided to fly up for the occasion. Her mom and stepfather were flying in from England, and despite his poor medical condition, that was not going to stop his support. Everything was going great, but on the second day he had a heart attack. It truly put everything into perspective for me. The following Monday, I suddenly began coughing up blood - something that had never happened to me. I remember sitting on the tile floors of my school bathroom coughing and crying over the pool of crimson in the toilet. I was put into the hospital and diagnosed with pneumonia; the recovery process was intense and took much longer than my previous hospital visits. While there, we got a call my uncle had been resuscitated multiple times after suffering a major stroke. Those two weeks and the aftermath that followed was truly difficult, but it helped me realize the beauty of life and the importance of treating everyday as your last. I wasn’t truly happy, and it helped me realize I needed to change my life and become who I wanted to be. It is never too late to start. Start this moment, start now.
