"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

Throughout my 20 years of a blessed life, there have been several opportunities for Cystic Fibrosis to impact my journey. I have witnessed my family endure heartache over the loss of a loved one. I’ve observed the pain in my friend’s eyes as she asks about my PFT’s; knowing she loss her cousin to CF, and her other cousin struggles daily with the disease. Nevertheless, my first hospital stay has had the most significant impact to date, driving my determination to battle CF everyday! I was in Kindergarten when I developed double lung pneumonia, followed by MRSA, and was hospitalized in isolation for 2 weeks. Day 2, they wanted to discuss putting a port in my chest as they assumed I would be frequenting the hospital from then on. It was in that moment things became real, and I knew I never wanted to be in the hospital again. My parents decided against the port, and when I left that hospital I told myself I would do everything in my power to not return. Fifteen years later and I have not returned; however, memories of that hospitalization and ports forever live in my memory and inspire me to battle CF. I take my medications, practice good hygiene, and exercise regularly. It is not without struggle, but I push myself to be healthy everyday. I live for myself and those who can’t. Cystic Fibrosis' daily impacts and ramifications drive my determination to fight the daily battle.
