"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

At age twelve, I reluctantly agreed to participate in a yearlong research study. I ate about a half-cup of a flour, sugar, and salt mixture with a ground-breaking type of oil that could potentially assist me in absorbing the nutrients that my body could not take in. However, this mixture tasted like dry cement infused with motor oil. My mother attempted to bake it into a variety of foods to conceal its flavor, but to no avail. I finally decided midway through the first month of the study to eat it plain. Although I never acclimated to the taste, I resolved that I would endure this daily torture. I realized that this miracle food ingested daily may not only benefit me, but, more importantly, it could improve the health of the thousands of other people living with cystic fibrosis. At the completion of the study, I found that this mixture did indeed aid in my body’s absorption of nutrients, as I both grew taller and gained weight, and could do the same for others with CF. I devoted my time to this study to provide a better quality of life for everyone living with CF today and for future generations to come. As a result of completing this study, I found that I had the determination and patience to face all obstacles that come my way, allowing me to pursue my passions and inspiring me to work towards a career in research to find a cure for cystic fibrosis.
