"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

Five months after my bilateral lung transplant I purchased a new Trek road bike as a gift to myself for surviving and persevering through the long and arduous transplant process. That Sunday I decided to take my bike, and new lungs, out for a test ride. I set out to ride until I was exhausted with the goal of determining what kind of endurance these new lungs could sustain. At 5 miles, I was feeling fantastic. My lungs felt great and my legs were warm. At 10 miles, I began to feel a good leg burn that I hadn’t felt in many years. I continued until my legs could go no further, and to my surprise, that occurred at mile 50. I don’t remember the last time my legs, and not my lungs, were the limiting factor in an aerobic exercise. During that ride, it was as if the dark butt of 25 years of coughing, mucous, and difficulty breathing had finally gone away. I now understood what ‘breathing freely’ truly meant and was excited for what this new life post-lung transplant had to offer. Although I was already a major supporter of organ donation after my liver transplant in 2006, I decided I wanted to have more of a direct impact in the lives of other organ transplant patients by becoming a nurse. I quickly chose to enroll in nursing school that following year and have the career goal of becoming a nurse practitioner in a transplant clinic.
