"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

The past twenty-five years have been the most influential in history for patients with Cystic Fibrosis. Twenty-five years ago, CF patients were not expected to reach age twenty. Now, thanks to numerous recent medical advances, I can behave more like a typical teenager and expect to live close to a normal lifespan. One of the most significant improvements within my lifetime was the widespread implementation of electronic chest physiotherapy treatment (CPT) vests. Before these, my family performed chest physiotherapy manually, clapping their palms on virtually every portion of my rib cage while I reclined in a variety of positions and angles. As a very active child, it was challenging for my parents to keep me engaged while performing manual CPT, since I had to lay in certain positions and could not move much for an unbearably long time. Also, because I could not do manual CPT on my own, it was difficult for me to have babysitters or stay at anyone’s house. However, electronic CPT transformed my life. Upon receiving my first vest, I was able to begin multitasking during my breathing treatments and become self-sufficient. Now I can sleepover at friends’ homes, stay home alone, and go off to college without any complications, since I can regularly operate my own chest percussion. Electronic CPT has given me hope for my adult life. Before this medical miracle, my future was uncertain, but now I can see myself being healthy, having a family, and living my dream.
