"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

In March of 2017, just a couple days before my eighteenth birthday, my mom received a phone call from my CF doctors saying that at my last appointment traces of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, a bacteria causing complications in CF patients, were discovered in my lungs. Upon hearing this news, I was put on an additional nebulizer treatment and antibiotic twice a day for 28 days. Around the same time I heard the news of my diagnosis, I also had to take on the responsibility of managing doctor phone calls and medication refills since I had turned 18 and my parents no longer could. The combination of the bacterial infection and additional responsibilities with my medications was extremely difficult to handle at first. Through the past couple of months, these occurrences have impacted my journey with Cystic Fibrosis in the sense that I have had to take on more responsibility each day to not only keep up with medication refills and doctor appointments, but also to put in more time doing treatments to keep myself healthy. The additional responsibility has caused me to realize the importance of doing my treatments before entering college in the fall. I have also learned that in order to complete all the necessary elements of living with CF it is very important to stay organized and take responsibility for my health. In conclusion, I believe that these recent events have encouraged me to take action and adapt to difficulties that arise with CF in my life.
