"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

My elementary school had a fundraising race where kids ran around the playground as many times as possible in half an hour, collecting Popsicle sticks for each lap. When I was 6, I participated and couldn’t even make it around the playground once, no matter how hard I tried. I was so tiny and weak from CF that was all I could do. On my 7th birthday, I got a Gastronomy tube inserted and then was given nightly feedings through my G-Tube. I quickly grew in both weight and strength. The next year when I ran the same race, I ran around 22 times and could have gone more but time ran out. I was so excited to have the energy to run, I didn’t want to stop. Every time I ran by my mom, she was crying. She was so happy to see the stamina I now had! The doctors had given me my life back. My artwork is a monologue I performed as Helena in my high school’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, one of the roles I fantasized of having. It has always been my dream to be a professional actor. If not for that G-tube, and many other advances in CF research, I never would have had the stamina to perform in a Shakespeare play. The G-tube allowed me to pursue my dream, and I am now trying to get my bachelor of fine arts in acting at Central Michigan University.
