"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

Last year I presented a research poster at the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference. I also participated on a panel for new CF professionals. This experience altered the course of my CF journey. Like most young adults with CF, I am self-sufficient and resilient. Despite the demands of CF, my life is full of adventure. Only my friends know that I have CF and few realize the gravity of my condition. In the past, I didn’t want to discuss my CF, and I didn’t think there was a reason to share my story. Participating on that panel made me realize the power of sharing. I was the only patient on the panel; the others were parents of children with CF. As we told our stories, mine was the most positive. It was gratifying to provide my perspective to families and providers who are daunted by the challenges of CF. Energized by my panel experience, I shared my story during Great Strides. I spoke at my local event and raised money by telling about my life with CF on social media. It is oddly empowering to talk about my struggles. I will continue to connect with the CF community and to advocate for CF causes. Others who shared their stories, participated in clinical trials, and fought for research funding and insurance coverage before me have given me strength and courage. I will continue to use my voice to help others face the challenges of CF.
