"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

The most impactful event that has fundamentally shaped my journey with CF is when I received my first standing ovation. My first standing ovation took place after I was granted my wish from the Make-A-Wish foundation. My wish was to record a CD of my own musical compositions and share it with the community. Further on, I received the opportunity to experience the recording process at a local recording studio and my CD was ready to be presented. A month later, the foundation organized a private concert/CD signing party as a way to present the CD. I performed all of my recordings at my private concert and after I finished, I received my first standing ovation. There was a certain undefeated power that I sensed while this was happening. It was a power that enabled me say to myself, “your life has meaning now, go make it worth something!” The power of that event has given me the confidence to cough out the darkest days and find the joy in living with CF. In all honesty, joy can be an emotion that many living under these circumstances often do not take for granted. We can easily be swallowed by the harmful thought of asking “what is the point of finding joy if my life is short lived?” My first standing ovation has taught me to perceive life through the lenses of optimism and hope in order to experience joy.
