"In honor of the 25th anniversary of the AbbVie CF Scholarship, choose an event (personal or cultural/historical) from the past 25 years and describe how it has impacted your journey with CF."

Last spring, after years of hard work and wondering, and months of anticipation just waiting for an answer, I was accepted into college at Brigham Young University. I have always dreamed of and aspired to attend college, but the insecurity and instability of my CF would constantly nag at me. I sometimes worried that I could never be healthy enough to actually go, but when I finally opened my letter from BYU, that all changed. It felt surreal; I had been accepted to college, and I was going to go, with CF and all. I had overcome a major obstacle in my life and proved my CF wrong. This moment has changed my perspective on cystic fibrosis forever, and has given me an immensely bright outlook on life. Knowing that I had accomplished such a milestone, and had done it with many more challenges than most of my peers had to face, was extremely empowering and inspiring. I felt liberated from the restrictions of my CF, and began to see all the opportunities ahead of me. I learned to see that my circumstances cannot hinder my life, my successes, or my happiness. In fact, even when my circumstances are trying and tough, I have found that I can grow through them, finding strength in myself opening my eyes to the beautiful and amazing experiences and people in my life.
