Undergraduate Recipient

"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

After undergraduate, I plan to continue to graduate school for a Masters and PhD. As a student, I would have benefitted from a mentor in the CF community. My parents and teachers are enthusiastic supporters, but they do not know that it is like to live with CF. I would start a mentoring program within the CF community to help high school and college students with the challenges of becoming adults with CF.

A CF Mentoring program could be local or even national. I would work with my local CF clinic coordinator to find adults with CF in the area interested in becoming mentors, and students wanting to be paired with a mentor. There would be no in-person contact, to avoid passing infections. Emails, phone calls and video chat would all work well as communication methods.

If this limited trial had success, I would network with other clinics, and even with the CF Foundation, to see if there was regional or even national interest in the program. Mentoring networks could even pair mentors and young adults across geographic regions, helping the young people gain a bigger perspective on having CF and the possibilities for their lives.

Imagine the positive impact of a program that allowed a student, unable to picture his or her life or future beyond high school, clinic visits and hospital stays, to connect with a successful professional, a software engineer, an executive, or even a university professor, with CF.
