"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

Ever since I can remember, I have had clear goals to attend medical school after college. I aspire to become an Endocrinologist at St. Jude’s Children's Hospital, a unique facility that focuses on cutting-edge pediatric healing. Due to the lowered immune systems of chemo-patients, the hospital takes major precautions in eradicating pathogens. The interior was specifically designed for easy clean-up with features such as leather furniture, tile floors, special air-filters and black lights lining the halls. Working in this environment will allow me to help save lives while preserving my own health along the way.

Reflecting on the past nineteen years, the biggest challenge I have faced is compliance with daily routines. The daily rigor of pills, breathing treatments, home IVs and exercise takes its toll. Although I am tenacious and determined, finding a continuous source of motivation can be difficult. In contrast, I have learned through real-life experience that a focus on helping others is by far the best medicine. I see a future where my personal routines will be a source of encouragement for others because I can empathize with their situation. Bedside manner is a critical part of healing and I intend to provide as much care to my patients as my physicians have given me. Throughout the process, I hope to encourage others with CF to pursue occupations and activities they are passionate about. I am optimistic in trailblazing a shift toward the attitude of living with a chronic illness from melancholy to uplifting.
