"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

“You’re only going to live to probably around 16-20.” From childhood, this sentiment loomed over my head. But where a lot of people might see that as a pretty negative outlook, I chose the route of positivity. It became this chip I carried on my shoulder. How much could I achieve in spite of this? How far could I go? My goal for the CF community is to shift this mindset of our battle for everyone. Sure, living with this illness is all at once frightening, painful, and challenging. However, as my most influential mentor has said, it’s our reality, not our excuse. That may sound a little brash, but let me explain. We have this one life to live. This is all we get! What we make of it is our choice, it’s not something that’s decided for us by our disease. To bring about this shift, I’ve decided to live as an example. To be the change I wish to see among my Cysters and Fibros. I choose every day to live my life to the fullest. To set personal goals for myself that seem out of my grasp, and then fight tooth and nail to bring my efforts to fruition. I want us all to feel enabled and empowered. To realize that we’re capable of anything. I mean, we already conquer our battles with CF on a daily basis. What could be more difficult than that?
