"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

Something that I am passionate about, which greatly affects the CF community in the United States, is our transplant system. I have seen many fellow CF patients suffer due to our system during my time as a student -- children that are dying too young due to not receiving organs. If my health were to drastically decline, organ transplantation may be in my future. Currently, the U.S. has an “opt-in” system, meaning people have to explicitly sign up to be on the Organ Donor Registry. Alternatively, many countries have implemented the “opt-out” program, where individuals are automatically registered but can formally opt-out of donating if they desire. Data has shown that countries using the opt-in method of organ donation have significantly fewer organs available for transplant. With an estimate of twenty U.S citizens dying daily before an organ becomes available for transplantation, this is unacceptable. As a community, we need to band together and continue pressing our representatives to change these policies in order to save American lives. Personally, in order to initiate these changes, I advocate whenever possible for family members, friends, and acquaintances to register to be organ donors. I also have corresponded with my elected representatives about the importance of changing our organ transplant system. The CF community is strong and we are passionate--certainly able to make a difference in this area.
