"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

From the moment I received my CF diagnosis, I have wanted to study nursing. The confidence, sincerity and commitment that nurses exuberate has inspired me to begin my own path as a health professional. As a nursing student I have learned more than I thought possible, but I have also come to realize there is an absence of education in the progression of CF treatment and care. There is also a significant gap in the comprehension of this disease, how it affects patients and families, and the CF community. I want to see nurses become better educated about Cystic Fibrosis. It is imperative that as future healthcare professionals, my peers and I should be educated about this disease and how to provide patient care while being conscientious of its impact. My role as a future nurse and lifelong CF patient puts me in a position of advocacy. As the only student in my cohort with CF, I am currently working with my faculty and instructors in order to present my unique perspective as a student speaker. Once I graduate, I plan to continue working with nursing organizations that are initiating educational programs and improved curriculum. My hope is to use my role as a nurse to promote awareness, gain recognition for this disease, and propel research forward to find a cure. The greatest impact I can make in my CF community is one that ultimately leads to a cure, and through education, I hope to achieve this.
