"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis four years ago. I had no idea what CF was at the time, and two years passed before I met someone else with CF and attended a Great Strides event. Great Strides was incredible because I never experienced such community before, but it was challenging to talk with other CF patients because they were all with their own teams. I recently heard about online groups, but you can’t get to fully know a person online; you only see what they choose to show. In addition, all I’ve seen the CF community talk about are medical situations, not who they are beyond their disease. As I pursue an education in art and psychology, I desire to teach people about who they are through art therapy and counseling. I strive to see a stronger community grow among people with CF by meeting in person to encourage each other. I know that there’s only so much one person can do, but I am a strong believer in the domino effect. To do my part, I would create more opportunities for meet-ups through Facebook events and Community Voice. I would include education on cross-contamination control, but encourage people to talk about themselves beyond their health. My dream is to be an art therapist and to help people recover emotionally from hardships. I believe that I can achieve this dream and help other CF patients gain healing while also encouraging them in who they are as beloved human beings.
