"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

Cystic Fibrosis is a lonely disease. Patients cannot interact with each other because of the spread of infection, so there is no one to bond with over the experiences we have. Even at events like the Great Strides Walk where we could meet others, we need to keep our distance. I would like to see CF patients and families be able to support each other in a way that transcends medicine and procedures, that provides personal connection and emotional sharing. The CF Foundation has done a great job of providing websites with resources for families, and I would like them to take it further by creating chat rooms where patients could meet online to connect in a safe environment. As the online world is becoming more developed, online friendships are becoming very common and I would be happy to help create such a change.

I have my friends, family, and my medical team to talk to about CF and they are all great, but they don’t have CF. They don’t know how it feels to not be able to wear a bikini because of the g-tube or to be afraid of the reaction of a new roommate in college because you have to tell them about the therapies and pills. I believe creating chat rooms for CF patients to bond and have a connection to those who go through these same life experiences would be a great way to help patients feel less alone while fighting this disease.
