"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

The world we live in today is attempting to become healthier. On a regular basis we see medical warnings about smoking and quitting bad habits, advertisements about the importance of eating right and the push to get people in the gym and active. In the midst of this health movement, there is very little information on leading a healthy and active life while living with a chronic disease or illness.

While pursuing higher education, I hope for that to change. I am going to school to get my Master’s in Athletic Training, while previously I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology: Sports Medicine. My entire undergraduate and now graduate career has and will be focused on the importance of activity in our lives, and what to do in the event of injury. In all of my studies, however, I have witnessed an astounding lack of information on participating in activities while also having a disease to manage. As we know, physical activity is a big part in keeping CF lungs healthy and clear. I believe there shouldn't be a gap between healthy kids playing sports and sick kids (even those with asthma and heart murmurs, etc) playing sports. Through my education, which is heavily researched based, I would like to focus my research and efforts on making exercise and fitness easier and less scary for people living with CF. Cystic Fibrosis may slow us down in some ways, but it shouldn't ever keep us from playing the game.
