"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

During my senior year of High School I felt lost. I was overwhelmed by both the excitement and uncertainty of life at college. My friends were thrilled to leave home and start a new chapter in their lives. But in addition to that excitement, I had to worry about Cystic Fibrosis. I felt like no one understood my feelings or was able to answer my questions and concerns about college. Knowing that I could never interact with another CF patient added to that isolation. As the year went on, I realized how helpful it would have been to talk with a college student with Cystic Fibrosis. As I make the transition to college, I would like to see teenagers in the CF community help each other with issues related to college and life. As a college student I could initiate these changes through a mentor program. Technology can connect people on opposite ends of the earth, so it can easily connect two people with CF. I can start by making social media accounts where I reach out to people with CF. Eventually, I would like to create a website where I can connect people with CF in a mentoring relationship. Through email, text and skype, the older student can talk to a younger student. The mentor can answer questions, listen to problems and even send care packages to the younger student. I hope that these steps make students with CF more confident and comfortable during their transition to College.
