"As you pursue your dreams of higher education, describe what changes you would like to see in the CF community. What steps would you take to initiate these changes?"

As I pursue my dreams of higher education, I would like to see increased awareness of the severity of this disorder. Growing up, I was careless regarding my health and often put unimportant things, such as video games and hanging out with friends before doing my treatment or taking medicine. The lack of realization of the dangers of CF could cause others with this disorder to follow in my footsteps. The next steps that our community must take to ensure that kids are more educated on the matter won't happen overnight. I believe they consist of three different sections. The first includes educational, online videos for children with CF as well as their parents, explaining how to use the treatment and medicine and why it's important. The videos should also include statistics and interviews of people with severe cases of the disorder. The second focuses on first hand visuals. Meaning, people with CF visit younger children in hospitals to show them the effects CF has had on their lives and explain how they could've improved them. Lastly, the final step regards home improvement. Positive reinforcement is critical to improving children's health. Parents should include physical and verbal rewards for doing treatment which will create better habits to increase how often it is used. The youth is the key to spread awareness for future generations. We must ensure that people with CF don't carelessly live their lives, but instead live their lives without barriers.
