Meet the 2019 Scholars

"Choose one inspirational quote or motto that has helped you throughout your journey with cystic fibrosis. How do you live by your quote or motto and how has it motivated you to accomplish your goals?"

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” This quote is by J.R. Tolkien in his book The Fellowship of the Ring. The end of this quote, "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us," has inspired me in many ways to live my life to the fullest with the time I've been given. I have been blessed to have good enough health throughout my life to participate in sports, school, and other activities. Although CF can sometimes put a damper on these things because of tune-ups or medications, that does not mean that life comes to a stop. Whether I am sitting in the hospital bed or diving on the ground in a volleyball game, this quote reminds me that wherever I am, I should thank God for the things that I AM able to do and whole-heartedly work at them. Only I can decide how I will respond to all that life throws at me, and I have thus far lived my life with a positive attitude and a determination to never let CF hold me back from my goals in life.
