"Living through a global pandemic with a chronic illness, what is one piece of inspirational advice that you would give to other students with CF who are in the same or similar position?"

I lost my mom to stage four breast cancer during the global pandemic. She was my best friend. Mom read all my newspaper articles, supported all my ambitions, and loved me unconditionally. It would be an understatement to call her the greatest mom in the world. When she passed, my world froze. Life without her—it was unimaginable. The pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone, some more than others. But, if my experience has taught me anything, it’s gratitude. We need to be grateful for what we have, and we need to be appreciative of what we’ve had. Remaining positive despite the disturbing news, deaths, and isolation we’re experiencing is incredibly challenging. Gratitude helps. It allows us to find the joy in our present situation and reminds us to be thankful for our past. Nothing can be taken for granted. There is value in everything. Everything. Gratitude is the first step to conquering adversity. Positivity seems rare during such an enigmatic, unpredictable time, but it is possible. Even though my mom isn't here physically, I'm continually reminded of her impact on my life. She was an incredible woman, and thanks to her, I have the strongest, bravest angel to look up to. She inspires me everyday. I'll forever be grateful to have called her my mom. Gratitude is hope, guiding us toward positivity and optimism—something everyone could use right now. I encourage others to practice gratitude when they're facing their darkest moments of adversity. It really does help.
